Dental anxiety is a common problem that people of all ages face when visiting their dentist's office. Overcoming dental anxiety

Want to learn more about overcoming dental anxiety? The following tips can be reviewed by patients of all ages who may be anxious about visiting their dentist.

1. Discuss sedation options with a dentist

One way that dental anxiety can be overcome is through sedation. A lot of dentist's offices offer dental sedation, which helps reduce feelings of anxiety or fear. While sedation is not limited to certain people, it is important to discuss the different options with the dentist. Each patient is different, which means their needs may vary. Some methods of sedation may not be beneficial for children who suffer from dental anxiety, while adults may require something more intense. A couple of the most common types of sedation used to combat dental anxiety are laughing gas, otherwise known as nitrous oxide and oral sedation, which is typically in pill form.

2. Bring a family or friend to the appointment

Another way that patients can overcome dental anxiety is by bringing a friend or family member to the appointment. Most dental offices allow the patient to bring someone back with them during the appointment, which can help reduce anxiety and fear. It is always a good idea to talk with the dentist beforehand to make sure that they are okay with a plus one coming along.

3. Ask for details

A simple way to overcome dental anxiety is to talk with the dentist. When there is an expected procedure, the patient should talk with their dentist about the details and the process. Oftentimes, patients will feel more at ease when they know exactly what is going to happen and what to expect. On the flip side, if the patient is undergoing a routine exam or cleaning, they can ask the dentist to talk them through each step.

4. Bring items of comfort

When a person suffers from dental anxiety, it can be helpful to bring items of comfort to the appointment. Children typically always bring a blanket or stuffed animal with them, everywhere they go, which definitely helps combat dental anxiety. However, adults too can bring an item of comfort! Dentist offices will not judge adult patients and oftentimes recommend bringing something of comfort to help ease worries. While it may sound silly or embarrassing, it can actually go a long way when experiencing anxiety.
