Dental Implants: What Is Peri-Implantitis?

A dental implant is a common tooth replacement option. Dental implants are effective for replacing one or more missing teeth. But you should know that conditions like peri-implantitis can cause dental implant failure. If you are thinking about getting implants, it is beneficial to know how to make them last for a long period.

Peri-implantitis

Taking proper care of dental implants is crucial for their longevity. Otherwise, it can lead to an infection known as peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis can negatively impact gum tissues around implants. However, there are treatments available for peri-implantitis.

Peri-implant diseases

These diseases are considered to be inflammatory conditions. They affect the hard and soft gum tissues surrounding the dental implants. Just like a natural tooth, implants are usually affected by plaque buildup. With peri-implant diseases, bacteria build up on the base of the implant. After a while, the bacteria will irritate the gum tissue. This causes inflammation and tissue damage. If not treated early, it can cause implant deterioration.

Peri-implantitis is considered to be an extension of peri-implant mucositis. Peri-implantitis causes the deterioration of the bone that supports the implant. Peri-implant mucositis does not lead to bone loss. Some symptoms of peri-implantitis include bleeding from the gums and discomfort.

Dental implant failure

Peri-implantitis is associated with long-term dental implant failure. This occurs after the implant has healed and bonded with the bone and after a tooth has been restored. It is a common implant problem that is difficult to treat. However, some treatment options are effective.

Treatments

Treatment focuses on eliminating bacteria and tissue restoration. Using treatment options like antibiotics can treat a moderate infection. They can be given as pills or placed directly around the implant on the infected area. The oral surgeon may also use laser therapy to destroy the bacteria.

If the infection is serious, surgical treatment may be needed. The area around the implant will have to be cleaned before the surgeon can graft bone or gum tissue. This will help strengthen the region that the infection has weakened. This procedure is more complicated, but it can save the dental implant. Following treatment, a patient should schedule regular dental visits for some months. The surgeon has to monitor the healing and ensure that the implant is clean and stable.

Proper care of the implant

Knowing that plaque can accumulate at the implant’s base, it is necessary to clean it regularly. Brushing and flossing each day is necessary. Using hygiene aids can also help to keep the implant clean. Periodic visits will help to ensure that the bone and gums are healthy. Taking good care of the implant will leave a patient with a clean mouth and ensure it can last for a lifetime.

Extra steps

You should always take care of your dental implant. A good daily routine and help from your surgeon will ensure that it is clean and well-maintained. Regular cleaning will also prevent the buildup of bacteria. If you are worried about peri-implantitis, contact your oral surgeon.
