Difference Between Veneers and Dental Bonding

When it comes to improving the appearance of the smile, veneers and dental bonding are some of the most popular options available. The ease of customization, maintenance and appearance are few of the attributes that make them the perfect dental restoration procedures. However, when the choice comes down to only these two, which should you choose? To make things easier, this article covers the differences between the two options and how to make a decision.

Overview of dental bonding

Dental bonding involves the application of composite resin to the teeth to improve their appearance. The resin is malleable and can be molded as desired to change the tooth’s form. It can be applied for a decayed or chipped tooth. It is a practical option to consider for patients who have stained teeth or lost a part of the tooth enamel. It is a common method of covering receded roots caused by gum disease.

For this procedure, the dentist will first choose the shade of the bonding material. Next, they will apply the resin to the teeth and adjust it to their proper shape. They will use a unique light to harden the composite on the teeth. After hardening, the dentist will give it a good finishing. With bonding, there is no modification to the affected tooth, and the procedure can be completed in a single appointment.

Overview of dental veneers

Dental veneers are probably the most common procedure in cosmetic dentistry. They are thin costings usually made from porcelain and fitted specially for each tooth. Porcelain veneers are suited to cover flaws on the smile, including discoloration, minor damages or slight crookedness.

Unlike dental bonding, veneers are premade and produced in the dental lab before application. Hence, they are called indirect restorations. The dentist will need to file down part of the original tooth to create space for the veneer. Since removed enamel cannot be replaced, the covered tooth will always need porcelain veneers or crowns for protection.

The veneer is placed over the tooth with a dental adhesive. Since tooth preparation and a dental lab process is involved, it takes longer to get dental veneers, compared to dental bonding. There is no special maintenance required for a veneer, just normal routine oral health care for the natural teeth.

Deciding between bonding and veneers

The choice between veneers and dental bonding depends on certain factors, such as:

Cost: Dental bonding costs less than veneers

Durability: Veneers are remarkably more durable than bonding and have a longer lifespan. They also do not break, stain or chip easily

Time: Bonding process is faster than veneer placement

Appearance: Veneers have the natural luster of normal teeth that is unlike bonding. However, they are both customizable to match the natural teeth

Lasting effect: Veneers are regarded as irreversible procedures since the process alters the tooth’s structure. There is no going back after getting veneers

Final note

Ultimately, the choice between veneers and bonding should happen after consulting with the dentist. They will guide you on the best option to achieve your desired smile.
