If you are thinking about getting dental implants, you should first understand the process. It is also good to be aware of the benefits this restorative treatment provides. There are many advantages to getting implants over other options. One of the challenges with getting implants, however, is that the process is lengthy. There is also some pain and soreness associated with the procedure. The good news is that with the right approach and diligence on your part, you can make a full recovery.
An explanation of the process
To put dental implants in a patient’s mouth to replace teeth requires the dentist to see the patient at least three times. There will first be a consultation. The dentist may take X-rays and make impressions of the persons’ mouth. The dentist may extract any damaged teeth at this time.
The process starts with the dentist placing a titanium post deep into the jawbone. The dentist first numbs the patient with a local anesthetic before making an incision in the gums. After a few months of healing, the patient returns and has another surgery. In this one, the dentist reopens the gums, exposing the top of the post. The dentist attaches an abutment to the post. At a later appointment, the dentist places a crown on the abutment.
Get plenty of rest
After each step of the dental implants process, the patient should avoid strenuous activities for at least 24 hours. During this period, the person should plan to take time off work, school, or other functions. Lying down with the feet elevated will help the individual regain their strength following the surgeries. The patient may want to relax for a few more days depending on their comfort level.
Taking medication
There will be some jaw and gum soreness for several days or even a couple of weeks following the surgeries. To ease this discomfort and irritation following getting dental implants, the patient can take over-the-counter medications. The dentist can even write a prescription for a drug if the pain is not subsiding or is getting worse. Patients should take any medication as directed.
Using an ice pack
Because the dentist will make incisions to place the dental implants, there will be some swelling in the mouth. Applying a cold compression pack is one of the most effective treatments for inflammation. The patient should keep ice on the affected area for about 30 minutes at a time several times a day. If the swelling has not gone down after a week, the patient should contact the general dentist.
Avoiding certain foods
During the recovery period, the individual should not bite into some foods. It is good to stay away from hard, sticky, or chewy foods for a week or two. Instead, eating soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and other soft items will reduce the risk of feeling pain. Gradually, the patient can eat other foods.
Care for yourself and enjoy the benefits of dental implants
Implants are an effective tooth-replacement treatment. The recovery can be difficult, but there are ways to make it less challenging. Follow these tips so you can feel well soon. Your dentist can also advise you on ways to find relief from pain and soreness.
